Shona Helstrom

Shona began their clay journey in 2019 after taking a summer session at Stoneware Studio, where they were immediately hooked. They soon joined the regular studio sessions, learning from a variety of instructors and developing a strong foundation in ceramics. To continue expanding their skills and perspective, Shona attends workshops at Medalta in Medicine Hat, as well as virtual sessions with artists from further afield.

Their work focuses on experimenting with a range of surface techniques, including carving, slip application, stencils and resist to create layered depth in each piece. Shona is particularly interested in how these processes interact with different clay bodies and glazes; allowing color, texture, and movement to emerge naturally in the finished functional work. Their hope is that with each use, the piece reveals something new—whether discovered through sight or touch.
